U.S black to white mortality rate difference

Problem Statement:

Blacks of non-Hispanic origin are 20% more likely of mortality than non-Hispanic whites going back at least to 1960 when data collection of blacks in the U.S first began.

“What we know”

Using KFF.org map of death rate (#deaths per one humdred thousand) by state for blacks, there appears to be a higher mortality rate for blacks living in mid u.s, mideast, eastern, and southern states.KFF-org-death-rate-map-black

Using KFF.org CDC mortality data table, the District of Columbia is worst in class for black to white mortality rate ratio.

Black-white mortality rate ratio by state

  1. In DC, the death rate due to heart disease for blacks is approx. 333 deaths per one hundred thousand vs. 116.6 deaths per one hundred thousand for whites, about three times higher.
  2. In DC, the death rate due to cancer for blacks is approx. 250.4 deaths per one hundred thousand vs. 119.9 deaths per one hundred thousand for whites, about two times higher.
  3. In DC, the death rate due to accidents for blacks is approx. 48.2 deaths per one hundred thousand vs. 26.4 deaths per one hundred thousand for whites, about two times higher.
  4. In DC, the death rate due to cerebrovascular disease for blacks is approx. 51.5 deaths per one hundred thousand vs. 15.1 deaths per one hundred thousand for whites, about three and half times higher.
  5. In DC, the death rate due to chronic lower respiratory for blacks is approx. 32.8 deaths per one hundred thousand vs. 18.1 deaths per one hundred thousand for whites, about two times higher.
  6. In DC, the death rate due to diabetes for blacks is approx. 42 deaths per one hundred thousand vs. 6 deaths per one hundred thousand for whites, about seven times higher.

There’s a statistically significant difference for mortality rate by U.S region (states grouped by South, West, Midwest, and northeast) for both blacks and white.  Southern states have a higher mortality rate within race.  However, the mid-west region is elevated for blacks whereas it is not for whites.

Model#1

The southern lifestyle ( eating habits, etc.) plus a large percentage of blacks residing in the south and/or have adopted the southern lifestyle living in another region, is driving the overall mortality rate difference between whites and blacks.
